Direct thermal labels
A direct thermal label darkens where the printhead heats it, so the printer needs no ribbon. Zebra describes direct thermal as mainly for indoor, short to medium-term use, such as shipping labels.
The same sensitivity is its limit: heat and light, including sunlight, darken the label over time. For labels that must last years, or go outdoors, choose a thermal transfer label.

Zebra's rule of thumb: a direct thermal paper label suits a label that must stay readable for about six months with no chemicals, moisture or rubbing. For longer, or outdoors, Zebra suggests thermal transfer.
Zebra notes direct thermal labels darken with heat and light, including fluorescent light and direct sunlight, until the text or barcode cannot be read. Store rolls and printed labels away from both.
Desktop and mobile printers take different label widths, roll sizes and cores, so check yours before you order. Label roll sizes by printer.
