Why the ZD421
The ZD421 is Zebra's current 4-inch desktop in the ZD400 Series and the model Zebra names on its GK420 and ZD420 support pages as their replacement. It runs Link-OS and comes in direct thermal, thermal transfer (ribbon roll) and thermal transfer (ribbon cartridge) versions.
Direct thermal needs no ribbon. The thermal transfer roll model takes 300 m or 74 m ribbons. The cartridge model takes a 74 m ribbon cartridge that loads in one direction only, which makes ribbon changes simpler.
USB 2.0 and USB Host are standard, with Bluetooth Low Energy for the setup app. Ethernet 10/100, Wi-Fi 6 with Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 5 with Bluetooth 4.1 can be fitted at the factory or in the field, and RS-232 serial in the field, so a USB printer bought today can join the network later.
It understands ZPL II, EPL 2, XML, ZBI and PDF Direct, the same Zebra languages used by GK420 and ZD420 fleets. Test your existing formats once before you switch the whole fleet.
The ZD421-HC has a white housing, disinfectant-ready plastics, a sealed button panel, UV-resistant housing and an IEC 60601-1 certified power supply, for specimen, pharmacy and wristband labels.
Rolls up to 127 mm outside diameter on 12.7 mm or 25.4 mm cores (38.1, 50.8 and 76.2 mm with adapters). It prints labels, tags, receipt paper and wristbands, with a field-fit peeler or cutter.
The ZD421 works with Zebra DNA (formerly Print DNA). PrintSecure sets up secure connections, and Printer Profile Manager Enterprise, a separately licensed tool, manages a networked fleet from one place. ZebraDesigner Essentials label software is a free download.

The ZD421 prints a 4 × 6 inch (101.6 × 152.4 mm) courier label in about one second at 152 mm/s (6 ips). It prints up to 104 mm wide at 203 dpi and takes direct thermal media up to 108 mm wide, so the label fits. A full 127 mm roll on a 25.4 mm core holds about 64 m even at the thickest 0.19 mm media, or roughly 410 labels with a 3 mm gap.
The ZD421 prints MRP and net-quantity text at 203 or 300 dpi; check the height of the printed digit, not the font size setting. Ask us to set up your label format and print test labels on your roll.
To print Hindi, Tamil or another Indian script on the ZD421, load a licensed font for that script on the printer, or have the label software send the text as an image. Zebra describes the ZD421 as Unicode compliant with native OpenType font support. Its ZPL guide documents character shaping (^PA) and complex text layout (^TB) on firmware V60.14 or later, which scripts such as Devanagari need. Zebra's international font packs list Arabic, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, but no Indian script. Approve a printed proof before rollout. Use the ZD421-HC for patient wristbands as well as specimen and pharmacy labels. Its 4-inch print width also covers larger pharmacy labels that a 2-inch printer cannot.
Run the ZD421 in a room under 41 °C, and use a stabiliser or online UPS where mains runs high. Zebra rates it to run between 4.4 °C and 41 °C, on a supply rated 100-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz.

Zebra's support pages show that the GK420 and the ZD420 were last sold in Asia-Pacific on 31 December 2021 and that their support ended there on 28 February 2025. Both pages name the ZD421 as the replacement. The ZD421 keeps the 4-inch width and the ZPL and EPL languages, so most label formats carry over. Include one of your current labels when you ask for a quote.
Direct thermal prints on heat-sensitive labels and needs no ribbon, which suits shipping labels and receipts. The thermal transfer models print through a ribbon, which lets you use a wider range of label materials. Yes. Zebra lists a ZD421-HC healthcare model. It prints specimen labels, pharmacy labels and wristbands. If you print wristbands, mention the band type when you ask for a quote.
Not out of the box. The standard printer connects over USB, and its Bluetooth Low Energy is only for Zebra's setup app. Ethernet or Wi-Fi can be fitted at the factory or added later as a field-installable module, and RS-232 serial in the field, so a USB printer can join your network when you need it.
The direct thermal model. It needs no ribbon, prints up to 104 mm wide and takes media up to 108 mm wide, so a 4 × 6 inch (101.6 × 152.4 mm) shipping label fits. If the same printer must also make long-life product or asset labels, choose a thermal transfer model, which prints in both modes.
