Quick answer

Two questions decide it

1. What do you scan?

Printed labels at arm's length: SR. Tiny codes on circuit boards or medicine strips: HD, which reads a 3 mil Code 128. Marks on the part itself, such as dot peen or laser etch: DP or DPA. Documents, photos or signatures as well as codes: HP. Labels on top-level racking: XR.

2. Corded or cordless?

A corded DS3608 runs off the host's USB or RS232 port, has no battery to charge and works down to -30 °C. A cordless DS3678 links to a charging cradle over Class 1 Bluetooth, with a minimum 100 m line-of-sight range, and works down to -20 °C.

Every range is equally tough

All of them are sealed to IP65 and IP68, survive multiple 3.0 m drops to concrete at room temperature and 7,500 tumbles at 1.0 m, and work up to 50 °C. So pick by the code, not by toughness.

Which model for which job

Start from what you scan

Each job below names which of the DS3678-SR, DS3678-HD, DS3678-DP, DS3678-DPA, DS3678-HP and DS3600-XR suits it.

Warehouse picking, receiving and dispatch labels

The SR reads a 40 mil Code 128 from 4.4 cm to 152.4 cm, so one scanner covers a carton in the hand and a pallet label about 1.5 m away.

Consider: Zebra DS3678-SR, Zebra DS3608-SR (corded)

High racks and forklifts

The XR adds a far-range sensor: a 100 mil Code 39 reads up to 32.0 m and a 200 mil Data Matrix up to 30.5 m. For forklifts, the cordless models take an IP65 FLB cradle with a forklift mounting plate.

Consider: Zebra DS3600-XR

Tiny codes on electronics and medical devices

The HD reads a 3 mil Code 128 from 5.1 cm to 7.6 cm and a 5 mil PDF417 from 5.1 cm to 15.2 cm. It is a close-work scanner: a 20 mil Code 128 reads only up to 66.0 cm.

Consider: Zebra DS3678-HD, Zebra DS3608-HD (corded)

Marks on metal and plastic parts

Zebra lists dot peen, laser etch, ink mark, chemical etch, inkjet mold, cast and thermal spray marks for the DP; the DPA is sold for the same work, and we confirm it on a sample of your part. Hold them close: a 10 mil Data Matrix reads from 0.0 cm to 8.6 cm on the DP and from 0.5 cm to 12.1 cm on the DPA.

Consider: Zebra DS3678-DP, Zebra DS3608-DP (corded), Zebra DS3678-DPA, Zebra DS3608-DPA (corded)

Dispatch desks with delivery notes and e-invoices

The HP reads codes and also captures photos, signatures, OCR text and documents. It reads QR codes, such as the one on a GST e-invoice, and a 40 mil Code 128 out to 203.2 cm.

Consider: Zebra DS3678-HP

Freezers and cold stores

Corded models, including the corded DS3608-XR, work down to -30 °C. Cordless models stop at -20 °C and charge only from 0 °C, so keep the cradle outside the cold room.

Consider: Zebra DS3600-XR, Zebra DS3608-SR (corded)

Side by side

SR, HD, DP, DPA, HP and XR side by side

The SR reads everyday labels and the HD tiny, dense codes. The DP and DPA read part marks, the HP codes with photos and documents, and the XR rack labels up to 32 m away.

Which range?

Choosing between two ranges

SR or HD?

Go by your smallest code. The HD reads a 3 mil Code 128; the SR's spec sheet starts at 5 mil. The SR reaches further: a 40 mil Code 128 up to 152.4 cm, against 66.0 cm for a 20 mil code on the HD. Both are equally rugged.

SR or XR?

The SR tops out at about 1.5 m on a 40 mil Code 128. The XR adds a far-range sensor (1920 × 1080) and a green 520 nm laser aimer, and reads a 100 mil Code 39 up to 32.0 m. Its cordless version is rated for 80,000 scans per charge, against 100,000+ for the cordless SR.

DP or DPA?

Both read direct part marks and printed codes. Zebra's reference guide gives the DPA a longer close-up range on a 10 mil Data Matrix (0.5 cm to 12.1 cm, against 0.0 cm to 8.6 cm on the DP). But the guide lists the DPM modes and the direct or indirect lighting settings for the DP only. Send us a photo of your part and we will match the model.

HD or HP?

Both use a 1,280 × 960 sensor. The HD reads a 3 mil Code 128 close up; the HP's smallest listed code is a 5 mil Code 128, from 15.2 cm. Pick the HP when the same scanner must capture OCR text, photos or documents, or read labels out to 203.2 cm on a 40 mil code.

Corded DS3608 or cordless DS3678?

Corded: powered by the host, nothing to charge, rated to -30 °C, and lighter (305 g against 407 g for the SR). Cordless: a 3,100 mAh battery that charges in the cradle in up to 3 hours on external power, and Zebra's guide describes up to seven scanners on one cradle on supported configurations. For the HP, Zebra lists a corded model but no India & Korea corded part number, so we confirm it before quoting.

For buyers in India

Freezers, summer heat and Indian codes

Freezers and cold stores

Corded DS3608 models are rated to -30 °C. Cordless DS3678 models are rated only to -20 °C, and their batteries charge between 0 °C and 40 °C, so keep the cradle outside the cold room. Zebra suggests its heated scanner holder to reduce condensation on the scan window when you move in and out of a freezer.

Hot docks in summer

Every DS3600 works up to 50 °C, but a cordless battery charges only up to 40 °C. Mount the cradle in shade or in an air-conditioned room.

Medicine-pack codes

Every model here reads QR Code and Data Matrix, the codes on medicine packs and API labels. For very small codes on strips and vials, choose the HD.

India & Korea part numbers

Zebra's DS36X8 reference guide lists 'India & Korea' part numbers for the SR, HD, XR, DP and DPA, corded and cordless, and for the cordless HP. Zebra stopped selling the ER versions (DS3608-ER and DS3678-ER) in APAC on 30 June 2025 and names the XR as the replacement. We confirm the exact configuration with the distributor before you order.

Indian mains

Corded models take power from the host. Where a 12 V supply is needed, for some cables or a cradle, Zebra's PWR-BGA12V50W0WW accepts 100-240 V AC, which covers India's 230 V mains.

Questions buyers ask

Zebra DS3600 questions

What is the price of a Zebra DS3600 scanner in India?

It depends on the range (SR, HD, DP, DPA, HP or XR), corded or cordless, the cradle and cables, and the quantity. Ask our team for today's competitive price: share your requirement and budget, and we will help you choose the right configuration and send a written quotation with current pricing and delivery time.

DPM or DP: what is the difference?

DPM means direct part mark: a code stamped, etched or printed straight onto a part. In the DS3600 range, the DP and DPA are sold for these marks; send us a sample part and we will confirm which reads it. Zebra lists dot peen, laser etch, ink mark, chemical etch, inkjet mold, cast and thermal spray. They read printed labels too, but only close up: a 13 mil UPC reads from 2.5 cm to 14.7 cm on the DP.

Which DS3600 reads the smallest barcodes?

The HD. Zebra lists a 3 mil Code 128 from 5.1 cm to 7.6 cm, while the SR and HP sheets start at 5 mil. For 2D marks below 5 mil made on the part itself, Zebra's guide lists an Ultra High Density DPM setting for the DP. It is off by default.

Which one reads labels on high racks?

The XR. It has a near sensor and a far sensor, and a green laser aimer you can follow at distance. Zebra's typical ranges are up to 26.7 m for a 100 mil Code 128 and up to 32.0 m for a 100 mil Code 39. By comparison, the SR reaches about 1.5 m and the HP about 2 m on a 40 mil Code 128.

Corded or cordless: which should we buy?

Choose corded for a fixed desk, a packing line or a room colder than -20 °C: it is powered by the host and works down to -30 °C. Choose cordless for staff who walk the aisles or drive forklifts: the 3,100 mAh battery charges in the cradle, and Bluetooth reaches at least 100 m in open line of sight. Zebra's spec sheets give one range table for both versions in each range.

Can a cordless DS3600 work in a cold store?

Down to -20 °C, and the battery charges only from 0 °C. For colder rooms choose the corded model, rated to -30 °C, and keep any cradle outside.
